Elizabeth Charlotte Sophia Becher (1850-1891)
Elizabeth 'Bessie' Charlotte Sophie Becher, the second of the ten children of Septimus Harding Becher and Augusta Emily nee Prinsep, was born 1st October 1851 at Simla. Her Godmothers were Mrs Mountain and Mrs Bird.
She was educated at Oaklands House School, Woolavington, Midhurst, Sussex, under the Headmistress Matilda Mellersh and was there aged 9 in the 1861 Census as were two of her younger brothers, Harry Macdonald Becher and Philip Tudor Becher then aged six and four respectively.
She first met her future husband, James Lovell Peters, on 11th October 1869 in Dresden, Germany and the photos top and left were both taken there. They eventually married on 1st August 1877 at St Mary's Church, Barnes, Surrey. He was a Solicitor born 16th December 1846 at Willsbridge, Somerset the son of Edward Peters and Augusta Jane Nicolls, the 6th child of Lt. Gen. Sir Jasper Nicolls KCB and Anne Bythia Badcock.
Of passing interest is the fact that for some years prior to 1891 Bessie and her husband and family lived at 18 St Leonard's Terrace, Chelsea only a few years before the same house was occupied by Bram Stoker, the author, who wrote Dracula while living there and there is a blue plaque referencing this on the front of the house. I have letters describing in detail one of the Christmases Bessie, and all the family had there.
